What is Kultus?
Culture, events and creative activity in the Helsinki region
Kultus is an online service maintained by the Annantalo Arts Centre and supported by the Ministry of Education and Culture. It provides up-to-date information on cultural activities for children and young people in the metropolitan region. More than 200 arts and culture players use Kultus to post information on their events, workshops and various community projects for comprehensive schools, day-care centres and secondary schools. Kultus also provides information on seminars, trainings and briefings for teachers.
Kultus is used by the Helsinki Education Department to support schools and teachers in incorporating cultural education in the curriculum. The service supports cooperation between arts and culture players and schools, and helps the arts and culture scene to target its offerings at schools. Teachers can use Kultus to identify the events that best suit their educational needs. Events can be searched for according to age group, art form, subject or theme. Preliminary reservations for events can also be placed. A concert may support mathematics learning, a theatre performance can boost language studies, and an art exhibition might help explain biology!
The events posted in Kultus were earlier compiled twice a year into a printed Teacher’s cultural calendar, which was distributed to comprehensive schools, upper secondary schools and vocational schools in Helsinki. As of autumn 2016, the printed calendar is no longer published. Instead, up-to-date information on cultural offerings is published via the Kultus online service.
